Can you tell us what your post code is?

This will help us create an interactive map of stories from across the country. If you are unsure, you can find out at https://www.nzpost.co.nz/tools/address-postcode-finder

To build the People's Review of Renting we've carefully developed questions to get a good picture of renters' experiences. But we understand you may be short of time. What would you like to share today?

Thanks {{answer_BHIA}}, what are your stories about renting?

Please include as much detail as you can, so people can understand the situation. Eg. Where and when? What happened? How did it affect you? (If it’s easier, record your story on your phone, then send us the audio or video file on the next question)

The following questions might get you thinking:
- Is your house warm, dry and safe? Tell us about it
- Tell us about a time when something needed fixing. What did you do? What was the result?
- Tell us about the condition of your home
- What is your landlord or property manager is like
- Have you ever had to move out of a rental home earlier than you'd like? Why, what happened, and where did you go?
- Have you ever had trouble leaving a fixed term tenancy? What happened?
- Have you ever try to complain to the Tenancy Tribunal? Tell us the story of what happened.
- Do you think your housing has affected your health?

Great, thanks for that! If you've got photos, videos, or audio recordings, that you'd like to share to support your story please upload them here

If the files are too big, please email them to info@actionstation.org.nz.

We'll read (or listen) to all your stories, but to help us sort them, can you please let us know what your story was about?

To get more stories of the reality of renting in the media, we want to put these stories on an interactive online map. Are you okay to share your story publicly?

We'll never share any of your personal contact information publicly

Thanks for letting us share your story. If you don't mind being contacted by a journalist or one of the ActionStation or Renters United team, to talk more about your story could you please give us your phone number?

If not than just skip this question

Thanks for that {{answer_BHIA}}, we know personal stories are really powerful. It’s also helpful to get a few figures too, so are you happy to answer a few more questions about your renting situation?

A few questions about your renting experience

What sort of place do you live in?

In total, how many people live with you (including yourself and children)?

How much rent does your whole household pay to your landlord per week (excluding any expenses like power and gas)?

Who do you pay rent to?

Has your rent, at the same property, increased in the last year?

How much has your rent increased by?

If you've moved in the last two years, why did you move?

Could you tell us more about why you moved?

The place I live in is warm and comfortable

It's overcrowded

I avoid using heating because of high bills

In total, is there more than an A4 sheet of paper worth of mould visible?

This is without cleaning it off and can be from multiple places.

I think the place I live in negatively affects my health and/or the health of those that I live with

I feel confident that if something needs fixing, my landlord will respond quickly

I worry about my tenancy ending before I want to move

I feel confident I know my rights as a renter

If you have a dispute with your landlord, do you know how to stand up for your rights as a renter?

Why wouldn't you stand up for your rights?

Could you let us know why?

Does your rental have a working smoke alarm?

(By law, your landlord must provide a smoke alarm)

Is there an effective heater that's fixed to the wall?

Does the place you live have ceiling and underfloor insulation?

(Insulation statements are now compulsory for all new tenancies. Ceiling and underfloor insulation will be compulsory from 1 July 2019)

Is the place you live in weathertight?

(E.g. No leaks or draughts.) By law your landlord must provide a home in a reasonable state of repair.

Do all the power outlets and light switches appear safe?

Thanks for answering those questions {{answer_BHIA}}, would you also like to share a story about your renting experience?
